Maureen - United States Gürcan did a wonderful job as our leader and was incredibly knowledgeable. It was clear he was experienced and because of that, our trip ran smoothly and I didn't have to worry about a thing. I would put anyone I knew visiting Turkey into his capable hands. He gave us insights into Turkish history, culture and politics that we otherwise would not have learned about. Arif also had a great sense of humor and I felt like we engaged in genuine conversation as opposed to just hearing a historical lecture. I'd definitely recommend him without reservation to anyone visiting Istanbul. The tour (my first) went like clockwork, all arrangements for food ,travel, site visits handled by Tolga with great efficiency. Always efficient, organized, good natured with a depth of knowledge of the cultural, historical and architectural details of his country, plus a good sense of humour and willingness to go the extra mile. We spent three days with him in Istanbul and were amazed by his depth of knowledge which he conveyed in a simple and understandable way. We did not at any time feel rushed but at the end of each day were surprised at just how much we had seen and learnt. He sent us a detailed schedule, which more than covered our requirements, before we left U.K. Nothing was too much trouble and his recommendations for lunch were perfect. He was a great tour guide. I was very impressed with his passion for and knowledge of his country, his family-like relationship with the people everywhere we stayed or ate (even helped serve some of the meals, unbelievable!!!) and his ease in managing a group of 15 with such subtle ease and with any concern being immediately addressed. Even on a day off, he arranged for a boat cruise for the group, one highlight among many of the tour. Erkan tailored the tour to what we wanted to see and do. He was very informative and fun to have a drinks and dinner with. Our tour guide the next day, Liz, was also very good. Planning the tours with Erkan was efficient and although I was quite nervous about booking something online, it all worked out. Apparently in Turkey tourism is taken very seriously. The guides must obtain a 4 year university degree and are licenced through tthe government.
